Autism Awareness Day 2017
This World Autism Day (2nd April, 2017), the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres said:
On this World Autism Awareness Day, let us all play a part in changing attitudes toward persons with autism and in recognizing their rights as citizens, who, like everyone else, are entitled to claim those rights and make decisions for their lives in accordance with their own will and preferences. Let us also renew our promise, engraved in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, to leave no one behind and ensure that all people can contribute as active members to peaceful and prosperous societies.
Kind words and true, but we also need to take action and equip people with autism and others in the community with the tools they need to understand and interact successfully. This recently published list of 10 things every child with autism wishes you knew gives an overview of the complexity involved, but also ways in which others can understand people with autism.
1. See me for who I am
2. I hear, see and feel the world differently to you
3. I want friends, just like everyone else
4. My behaviour is my way of communicating
5. Interact with me in ways I can understand
6. I live in the here and now
7. I am anxious and worry a lot
8. Routine is really important to me
9. I need your help to access the world and learn
10. Think about what I can do, not what I can’t
As the dad of a teenager with autism, I have learnt a lot about the condition over the years, and have met so many amazing people with autism or with someone in their lives with autism. World Autism Day, April 2nd is a way of highlighting the issues we think are important, and increasing awareness of autism. Dignity Party is working every day to achieve fairness in access to services, education and the world of work for people with autism. Happy World Autism Day everyone!
